The Pattumalay Emerald - Where Emerald Leaves Meet Misty Peaks

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Idukki, Kerala, at an elevation of 3,000 feet, Pattumalay Estate unfolds like a vibrant tapestry woven from nature's finest threads. The cool mountain air and mist-kissed slopes create the perfect cradle for cultivating exceptional tea. The name "Pattumalay," meaning "silk mountain," reflects the estate's rich history, once adorned with mulberry trees for silk production. Today, it's a haven for tea connoisseurs, where emerald-green bushes blanket the hillsides, their leaves shimmering like precious gems.

A Legacy Woven in Silk and Tea
A Legacy Woven in Silk and Tea

But Pattumalay's story runs deeper than its verdant slopes. Its history whispers through the leaves, a tale that began long before the first tea plant took root. The estate, once a hub for silk extraction, transitioned to tea cultivation, embracing a new chapter in its journey. In 1935, Malayalam Plantations Ltd. took the reins, followed by significant development under Mr. BM Mar in 1943. Through the passage of time, Pattumalay has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, eventually becoming part of the RPG Group in 1989, and now flourishing under the ownership of Harrisons Malayalam Ltd., a part of the RPSG Group.

Unveiling the Excellence of Pattumalay Emerald Twirl Quality

At Tea Stories, transparency and quality are paramount. We're delighted to share the key scientific parameters that define our Pattumalay Emerald Twirl Green Tea. These insights offer a deeper understanding of this exceptional tea, influencing its delicate flavor, subtle aroma, smooth mouthfeel, and exquisite overall experience.

Total Ash

5.55%

Total ash is the inorganic residue remaining after tea leaves are burned, indicating the mineral content. This measures the total mineral content present in the tea.

Why it matters ?

  • Minerals contribute to the overall flavor profile of green tea, influencing its vegetal and subtly sweet notes.
  • The FSSAI prescribes a limit of 4.0 to 8.0% for total ash in tea.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald Twirl falls well within this range, meeting the highest quality standards for green tea.

Water Soluble Ash

65%

Water soluble ash refers to the portion of the total ash that dissolves in water. This indicates the presence of minerals like Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and phosphates, which are essential for tea plants and contribute to flavor.

Why it matters ?

  • These soluble minerals contribute to the briskness and lively character of green tea.
  • A higher percentage of water-soluble ash generally indicates a higher quality green tea.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald Twirl exceeds the FSSAI minimum limit of 45%, signifying its superior quality.

Water Soluble Extract

42.90%

Water soluble extract is the percentage of soluble substances extracted from tea leaves when infused with hot water. This measures the substances like caffeine, catechins, theaflavins and other compounds that contribute to its flavor, strength, and health benefits.

Why it matters ?

  • A higher percentage suggests a richer, more flavorful green tea.
  • A high water-soluble extract in green tea often correlates with a greater concentration of beneficial compounds like catechins.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald Twirl exceeds the FSSAI's minimum requirement of 32%, indicating superior quality.

Crude Fiber

11.80%

Crude fiber in tea represents the indigestible part of the tea leaf, mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. It plays a crucial role in determining the tea's quality and mouthfeel.

Why it matters ?

  • Lower crude fiber content generally suggests younger and more tender tea leaves were used, which often results in a smoother, more refined taste.
  • The FSSAI sets a limit for crude fiber in tea at not more than 16.5%.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald Twirl, with 11.8% crude fiber, comfortably meets this standard.

Grade

Green Tea Twirl (SFTGFOP1)

SFTGFOP1 stands for "Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe 1." This grade signifies the highest quality in terms of leaf appearance and plucking standard.

Why it matters ?

  • "Twirl" refers to the processing of the leaves into a unique twisted shape results in a green tea with a distinct appearance and flavor profile.
  • Twirl teas are known for their delicate, nuanced flavors and complex aromas
  • The "one bud and two leaves" standard ensures the tea is made from the youngest bud and leaves.

The Purity of The Pattumalay Emerald

At Tea Stories, your well-being is at the heart of everything we do. We go above and beyond to ensure our teas are not only delicious but also safe for you to enjoy. These safety parameters highlight our rigorous testing and commitment to exceeding industry standards.

Iron Filling

50 mg/Kg

Iron filings are tiny metal fragments that can contaminate tea during processing. This measures the amount of these metal fragments in the tea, which can affect its quality.

Why it matters ?

  • Iron filings are extraneous to the tea leaf and can negatively impact the taste.
  • The FSSAI prescribes a limit of 250mg/Kg for iron filings in tea.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald has low level, far below the FSSAI limit, indicating high quality and purity.

Glyphosate

No (Not Detected)

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide (weed killer) in agriculture. Residues of glyphosate can sometimes be found on crops if not used responsibly.

Why it matters ?

  • Glyphosate is not typically used in tea cultivation, and its presence can indicate unintended contamination.
  • The FSSAI sets strict limits for glyphosate residue in tea (not more than 1mg/Kg) to ensure safety.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald having no detectable glyphosate reflects our commitment to pure, high-quality tea, free from unwanted chemicals.

Heavy Metals

Well Below FSSAI Limits

Heavy metal are naturally occurring elements that can be present in trace amounts in soil and water. They can contaminate tea through soil, water, or air pollution during cultivation or processing.

Why it matters ?

  • Heavy metals can accumulate in tea plants, so monitoring their levels is crucial for safety.
  • The FSSAI sets strict limits for each heavy metal in tea to ensure consumer health.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald has been tested and found to have levels far below these limits, ensuring it is safe and pure.

Pesticides & Fertilizers

Safety Guaranteed

Pesticides are substances used to protect crops from pests like insects and fungi, while fertilizers provide essential nutrients for plant growth and increased yield while using them responsibly.

Why it matters ?

  • Pesticide residues can pose health risks, and excessive fertilizers can affect tea quality.
  • The FSSAI sets strict limits for various pesticides and fertilizers in tea to ensure safety.
  • The Pattumalay Emerald has undergone rigorous testing to guarantee it meets these safety standards and is free from harmful chemicals.

A Harvest of Youthful Leaves

Tender Beginnings: Our tea pickers carefully select the youngest and most tender leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant, ensuring a pristine starting point.

Icon 2

A Gentle Touch: Withering

Soft Preparation: In some cases, the freshly picked leaves may undergo a brief withering process to slightly soften them before the next step.

Icon 3

The Art of Steaming

Preserving Freshness: The leaves are rapidly heated in a steamer to deactivate enzymes and prevent oxidation, a crucial step in maintaining the green tea's vibrant color and delicate flavor.

Icon 4

The Twirl of Tradition

Shaping Perfection: Using vintage orthodox rolling machines, the steamed leaves are gently curled and twisted into the signature "twirl" shape. This process releases the essential oils, enhancing the tea's aroma and flavor.

Icon 3

A Gentle Drying Process

Setting the Stage: The rolled leaves are carefully dried at low temperatures to remove moisture and set the final shape. This delicate drying process ensures that the tea retains its fresh, green character.
