Unveiling the quality secretes of The Kolukkumalai Parable

At Tea Stories, transparency and quality are woven into every leaf. We're thrilled to present the scientific parameters that define The Kolukkumalai Parable. These insights offer a deeper understanding of this exceptional tea, nurtured by nature's magic in the pristine environment of the Kolukkumalai Estate.

    Total Ash

    5.20%

Total ash is the inorganic residue remaining after tea leaves are burned, indicating the mineral content. This measures the total mineral content present in the tea.

    Why it matters ?

    • Minerals contribute to the complex flavor profile of this high-grown tea.
    • The FSSAI prescribes a limit of 4.0% to 8.0% for total ash in tea.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable falls well within this range, meeting high quality standards.

    Water Soluble Ash

    56.20%

Water soluble ash refers to the portion of the total ash that dissolves in water. This indicates the presence of minerals like Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and phosphates and others.

    Why it matters ?

    • These soluble minerals contribute to the briskness and lively character.
    • A higher percentage of water-soluble ash generally indicates a higher quality black tea.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable exceeds the FSSAI minimum limit of 45%, signifying its superior quality.

    Water Soluble Extract

    35.40%

Water soluble extract is the percentage of soluble substances extracted from tea leaves when infused with hot water. This measures the substances like caffeine, catechins, theaflavins and other compounds that contribute to its flavor, strength, and health benefits.

    Why it matters ?

    • A high value suggests a flavorful and full-bodied brew.
    • The FSSAI recommends a minimum of 32% for black tea.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable exceeds this standard, indicating superior quality.

    Crude Fiber

    10.50%

Crude fiber in tea represents the indigestible part of the tea leaf, mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. It plays a crucial role in determining the tea's quality and mouthfeel.

    Why it matters ?

    • Lower crude fiber content generally suggests more tender tea leaves were used, which results in a smoother & refined taste.
    • The FSSAI sets a limit for crude fiber in tea at not more than 16.5%.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable, with 10.50% crude fiber, comfortably meets this standard.

    Grade

    Flowery Orange Pekoe (FOP)

FOP stands for "Flowery Orange Pekoe," a grade that signifies a high proportion of young leaves and buds.

    Why it matters ?

    • FOP grade ensures a good balance of young leaves and buds, contributing to the tea's flavor and aroma complexity.
    • Orthodox processing preserves the natural characteristics of the tea leaves, resulting in a more nuanced and flavorful cup.
    • This combination yields a black tea with a distinctive appearance, a smooth texture, and a satisfyingly brisk character.

    Purity of The Kolukkumalai Parable

At Tea Stories, your well-being is at the heart of everything we do. We go above and beyond to ensure our teas are not only delicious but also safe for you to enjoy. These safety parameters highlight our rigorous testing and commitment to exceeding industry standards.

    Iron Filling

    10 mg/Kg

Iron filings are tiny metal fragments that can contaminate tea during processing. This measures the amount of these metal fragments in the tea, which can affect its quality.

    Why it matters ?

    • Iron filings are extraneous to the tea leaf and can negatively impact the taste.
    • The FSSAI prescribes a limit of 250mg/Kg for iron filings in tea.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable has an extremely low level, indicating high quality and purity.

    Glyphosate

    No (Not Detected)

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide (weed killer) in agriculture. Residues of glyphosate can sometimes be found on crops if not used responsibly.

    Why it matters ?

    • Glyphosate is not typically used in tea cultivation, and its presence can indicate unintended contamination.
    • The FSSAI sets strict limits for glyphosate residue in tea (not more than 1mg/Kg).
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable having no detectable glyphosate reflects our commitment to pure, high-quality tea.

    Heavy Metals

    Well Below FSSAI Limits

Heavy metal are naturally occurring elements that can be present in trace amounts in soil and water. They can contaminate tea through soil, water, or air pollution during cultivation or processing.

    Why it matters ?

    • Heavy metals can accumulate in tea plants, so monitoring their levels is crucial for safety.
    • The FSSAI sets strict limits for each heavy metal in tea to ensure safety.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable has been tested and found to have levels far below these limits.

    Pesticides & Fertilizers

    Safety Guaranteed

Pesticides are substances used to protect crops from pests like insects and fungi, while fertilizers provide essential nutrients for plant growth while using them responsibly.

    Why it matters ?

    • Pesticide residues can pose health risks, and excessive fertilizers can affect tea quality.
    • The FSSAI sets strict limits for various pesticides and fertilizers in tea.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable has undergone rigorous testing to guarantee it meets these safety standards.

    Hygiene

    Exceeds Industry Standards

Maintaining high levels of hygiene is crucial throughout the entire tea production process, from field to cup.

    Why it matters ?

    • Strict hygiene protocols are followed at every stage, from harvest to packaging, to prevent contamination.
    • Employees are trained in food safety and hygiene best practices.
    • The Kolukkumalai Parable exceeds industry standards to ensure a safe and high-quality tea.

The Kolukkumalai Parable, a premium orthodox tea from the extraordinary Kolukkumalai Estate, offers just such an experience. Perched at a breathtaking 8,000 feet, Kolukkumalai is the one of the world's highest tea estates, its slopes carpeted in a vibrant tapestry of tea bushes. Here, amidst the clouds, time seems to stand still, the air infused with whispers of the past.

    A Legacy Etched in Time
    A Legacy Etched in Time

Kolukkumalai's story began in the 1920s, a testament to British vision and the Chettiar Brothers' entrepreneurial spirit. Over seven years, with unwavering determination, a tea empire emerged from the wilderness. The tea factory and buildings, testaments to human ingenuity, were constructed entirely using pony paths and headloads, a feat that echoes through the estate's legacy.

From 1935 to 1971, the Chettiar Brothers nurtured Kolukkumalai, their "Right Wary Scheme" a symbol of their commitment to the land. In 1971, the estate passed to the A.J. Group, who continue to uphold the traditions that have defined Kolukkumalai for nearly a century.

A Tea Steeped in History and Flavor

Crafted using vintage orthodox methods, these hand-picked leaves produce a tea of unparalleled quality. Its amber liquor unfolds a symphony of flavors - a bold, full-bodied taste with hints of malt and spice, balanced by a subtle sweetness. The Kolukkumalai Parable is more than just a tea; it's a journey to the clouds, a connection to the past, and a celebration of the human spirit.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

At 8,000+ feet in the Western Ghats, Kolukkumalai is among the highest working tea estates in the world. At that elevation, temperatures stay cool year-round, mist hangs over the slopes most mornings, and the air is thin. Tea leaves grow significantly slower than at lower altitudes.

Slower growth means more time on the plant — which concentrates flavour compounds, polyphenols, and the aromatic oils that produce the Kolukkumalai Parable's distinctive muscatel and stone fruit character. It is altitude, more than anything else, that makes this tea taste the way it does.
FOP stands for Flowery Orange Pekoe — a whole-leaf orthodox grade with a good proportion of young leaves and buds. It sits below TGFOP in the grading hierarchy, which means fewer golden tips per batch.

But grade is only one dimension of quality. Terroir and altitude are another — and Kolukkumalai's extreme elevation produces a character and complexity that few estates at any grade can match. The price reflects scarcity and provenance: the estate is remote, access is limited, production is small, and the flavour profile is genuinely rare. A TGFOP from a low-altitude estate would not outperform it.
Muscatel in high-altitude tea is caused by a combination of slow leaf growth, cool misty conditions, and the concentrated aromatic compounds that develop at extreme elevation. At Kolukkumalai's 8,000+ ft, these conditions are more pronounced than almost anywhere else in India.

Darjeeling muscatel — particularly second flush — is the most famous expression of this character, grown at 4,000–7,000 ft in the Himalayas. The Kolukkumalai Parable has a related but distinctly different profile: brighter and crisper, with citrus and stone fruit alongside the muscatel, rather than Darjeeling's deeper grape-forward note. It is muscatel with a South Indian identity.
Both are high-altitude orthodox black teas with muscatel character — but they express it differently. Darjeeling second flush teas are grown at 4,000–7,000 ft in the Himalayas: floral, grape-forward, often with muscatel and a distinctive briskness shaped by Himalayan terroir.

The Kolukkumalai Parable is grown at 8,000+ ft in the Western Ghats — higher than most Darjeeling estates. Its character is brighter and more citrus-edged, with forest honey and stone fruit alongside the muscatel. If you enjoy Darjeeling first or second flush, The Kolukkumalai Parable is the closest South Indian equivalent — and worth comparing side by side.
At the standard dosage of 2g per 150ml, the 125g pack yields approximately 62 cups. Because the FOP whole-leaf leaves can be re-steeped 2–3 times, the effective yield rises to 124–186+ infusions per pack — bringing the cost per serving to well under ₹20.

For one of the world's highest-altitude orthodox teas, certified by the Rainforest Alliance and the Tea Board of India, that is exceptional value relative to comparable high-grown teas available in the premium market.
Milk is not recommended. The Kolukkumalai Parable's defining character — the muscatel, citrus, and forest honey notes — comes from the extreme altitude of the estate and the slow growth of the leaves. Milk proteins bind to the polyphenols and theaflavins in the tea, suppressing precisely these aromatic qualities.

This is one of the most distinctive orthodox teas in the Tea Stories range. Adding milk would be like pouring cream into a fine single-malt whisky. Drink it as brewed — without milk or sugar — to experience what 8,000 ft of elevation actually tastes like.
Yes — whole-leaf FOP orthodox leaves re-steep well. The first steep (3–4 min at 100°C) gives you the boldest expression: muscatel, stone fruit, and citrus upfront. The second steep softens slightly, revealing more of the forest honey and floral sweetness. The third is the most delicate and mellow.

Add 30–45 seconds to each successive steep. Most people find 2–3 steeps satisfying — and re-steeping is what stretches a 125g pack to 120+ effective infusions.
Yes — and cold brewing is particularly well-suited to high-altitude orthodox teas. Add 2g of leaves to 300ml of cold, filtered water and steep in the refrigerator for 8–10 hours.

Cold brewing draws out the muscatel sweetness and fruit notes while softening the spice edge — producing a clean, naturally bright infusion with no bitterness. The citrus and stone fruit notes come through especially clearly in a cold brew. A recommended option if you want to experience the Kolukkumalai terroir in a different register.
The pouch has a built-in tin tie — fold the open end over 2–3 times and press the tie flat to reseal. No separate container needed.

Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and strong-smelling spices. Orthodox black tea absorbs surrounding odours — keep it away from coffee, spices, and your stovetop. A properly resealed pack retains its full muscatel character for 4–6 months. This tea's aromatic complexity makes freshness worth protecting — reseal immediately after each use.
The Kolukkumalai Parable contains approximately 40–60mg of caffeine per cup — typical for a high-altitude orthodox black tea, and roughly half the caffeine in a standard cup of coffee (80–120mg).

For pregnancy, the general clinical guideline is to stay under 200mg of caffeine per day. One cup fits comfortably within that; two cups approaches it. Individual advice from a doctor is always recommended. If you are looking for a lower-caffeine option from Tea Stories, The Lockhart Lux (white tea, 15–30mg) or The Pattumalay Emerald (green tea, 25–40mg) are gentler alternatives.
High-altitude orthodox black teas are rich in theaflavins and polyphenols — compounds formed during full oxidation that have been studied for supporting metabolism, fat absorption, and gut health. The Kolukkumalai Parable's extreme growing conditions and slow leaf growth concentrate these compounds.

The effect is real but modest: it supports a healthy routine rather than replacing one. Brewed without milk or sugar, it is also a zero-calorie drink. Two to three cups a day is a practical, enjoyable addition to a weight-management habit.
Yes — the 125g pouch is gift-ready as it comes, made with premium FSC-certified boards. Standard packaging includes all labels: packed date, expiry, nutritional information, and pricing. Pricing can be removed on request — reach out at hello@tstories.in before placing your order.

For someone who appreciates rare, story-worthy teas, The Kolukkumalai Parable is one of the most distinctive gifts in the Tea Stories range — the world's highest-altitude estate in a cup. The Munnar Quintessence also includes a portion of The Kolukkumalai Parable alongside five other single-estate teas from Munnar and Idukki.
